Why a tutor for everyone

The best way to learn was never a secret.

One-to-one works. There were never enough teachers to give everyone that time.

What worries you about an AI tutor?

A maths lesson · thirty students, one teacher, fifty minutes

  1. Picture a maths lesson.

Someone near the back is still stuck on the first question.

  2. Now divide the attention.

Fifty minutes shared equally gives each student a hundred seconds.

  3. Some get more time after school.

Three in ten pupils in England have had private tuition.1

  4. Nobody thinks that's fair.

The chance to ask again depends on what a family can afford.1

What AI tutoring trials found

Stanford, 2024+4 percentage points in mastery overall; +9 for students of the lowest-rated tutors.5 Human tutors used AI support.
Harvard, 20250.73 to 1.3 standard deviations; over twice the learning in less time than in-class active learning.4
Nigeria, 20240.23 to 0.3 standard deviations after six weeks of after-school AI tutoring, worth 1.5 to 2 years of ordinary schooling.3
Classroom With a tutor
  1. Bloom measured what a tutor could change.

In 1984, he compared classroom learning with one-to-one tutoring.2

  2. Look where the tutored students finished.

About two standard deviations ahead, above 98% of the classroom; later studies find a smaller gap.27

  3. Three trials bring the line closer.

The two that report standard deviations land short of Bloom's tutor and clear of the classroom.34

  4. The tutor was the expensive part.

Ark One is for everyone in the classroom, including the twenty-one who never had a tutor.

You said: it'll replace teachers.

Fair. In Ark One's scenes you move the graph or the circle yourself, so the answer comes from what you do.

2× More than twice the learning with an AI tutor, compared with in-class active learning. Harvard, 2025.4

It can. So the model writes the practice, and the scene's maths engine checks every answer you make.

Six weeks of after-school tutoring with GPT-4 in nine public schools in Benin City; 0.23 standard deviations in English (up to 0.3 on some measures), equivalent to 1.5 to 2 years of business-as-usual schooling, at $48 per student. On the chart, an effect of 0.23 to 0.3 standard deviations places the average treated student at the 59th to 62nd percentile of the control group.

A randomised trial of 194 Harvard physics students; the AI tutor was given the correct solutions and limited to short replies. Effect size 0.73 to 1.3 standard deviations by quantile regression, 0.63 by linear regression which the authors note is depressed by a ceiling effect. On the chart, 0.73 to 1.3 standard deviations is the 77th to 90th percentile of the classroom group.
